진보와 보수에 관한 유머

한국에서는 어떤지 모르지만 미국에는 진보와 보수에 관한 유머가 많이 있다. 그런데 필자가 보수적이다 보니 보수의 입장에서 유래된 유머들을 많이 접하게 된다. 그 중 고개를 끄떡이게 만드는 유머 몇 개를 소개한다. 물론 희화(戱化)하고 과장된 표현들이 많이 있지만 재미로만 보기에는 아깝다는 생각도 드는 것들이다. 필자의 생각을 간간이 섞었는데 overly simplify 했고 때로는 cynical한 표현이라는 점을 이해하시기 바란다.

If a conservative doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one. If a liberal doesn’t like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.
같은 맥락에서
If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat. If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.
보이콧하고 막고 부시고 하는 일은 거의 진보의 전용물.

If a conservative doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they don’t like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church. A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it’s a foreign religion, of course!)

Conservatives believe in God. Liberals think they are God.
미국의 독립선언문에도 나타나 있지만 모든 인간은 창조주로부터 동등한 권리를 받았다는 것이 보수의 기본적인 사상이다. 이에 대한 필자의 소견은 예전에 피력한바 있다.

Conservatives want to leave everything to supply and demand. Liberals demand that the government supply them with everything.
수요와 공급의 원리는 개개인 또는 기업이 더 잘되기 위한 동기부여와 그에 따른 노력을 유발시킨다. 다시 말하자면 자기개발로 수요가 많은 기술이나 상품을 공급함으로 개인이나 기업의 가치를 향상시킬 수 있기 때문이다. 부단 없는 연구와 노력으로 새로운 수요를 창출하기도 한다. 진보의 주장이 깊어지면 말할 필요도 없이 사회주의, 더 나가서 공산주의로 가게 된다. 정부에서 공급하는 열등한 물질에 만족하고 경쟁 없이 사는 게으른 사회가 되는 것이다.

Conservatives think that people solve problems, and governments create them. Liberals think that governments solve problems, and conservatives create them.
보수는 국가가 책임져야 할 가장 으뜸가는 일로 국경수비 및 국가안보, 시민들의 자유와 안전의 보장을 꼽는다. 다른 일들, 예를 들자면 교육, 각종 규제, 치안 등등은 지방정부에서 처리해야 더 능률적이라고 생각하기 때문에 연방정부가 이런 일들에 끼어 들어 one size fits all로 일을 복잡하게 만들고 그래서 연방정부가 더 커지는 것을 못마땅하게 생각한다. 실제로 능률을 따지자면 연방정부나 지방정부나 개인기업에 비해서 형편없지만 그래도 지방정부가 좀 나은 편이다.

Conservatives think that schools should compete for business. Liberals think that schools should teach people not to become conservatives.
보수는 선생도 직업인데 결과에 관계없이 평생 직을 보장한다는 것은 이 세상에 없다고 말한다. 선생들도 능력평가를 받아야 된다고 주장한다. 교원노조가 학생들의 교육보다 선생들의 보호에만 치중하여 학생들을 성 추행한 교사를 해고시키기가 하늘에 별 따기라고 불평한다. 선생들은 가르치는 일은 직업이 아니라고 하지만 꺼떡하면 자신들의 대우를 위해서 노동자들이나 하는 파업을 한다. 보수는 이런 일들이 앞뒤가 맞지 않는 짓이라고 비판한다. 그래서 선생들은 보수를 싫어하고 학생들에게 진보사상을 주입한다.

Liberals think that the government should provide free healthcare. Conservatives think that free healthcare will be worth exactly what people pay for it.
보수는 싼 게 비지떡이라고 말한다. 진보는 공짜라면 양잿물도 마시겠다고 달려든다.

Liberals think conservatives are a bunch of deluded, money loving dickheads who would gladly trade the sun for a jar of mayonnaise. Conservative think liberals are a bunch of deluded, tree hugging sissies who don’t realize that we need to cut down a few trees in order to build a house.
진보는 주유소에서 펌프를 켜면 글자 그대로 휘발유가 그냥 나오는 것으로 안다. 누군가가 유전에 투자하고 땀 흘려 일하는 것은 모르쇠. 한 편으로 진보는 환경보호를 위해서 유전이나 발전소 짓는 것을 반대한다. 그리고는 휘발유나 전기 값이 오르면 가장 난리를 친다.

Liberals think the UN spreads peace. Conservatives think UN stands for Unbelievably Naïve.
보수는 UN은 이빨도 발톱도 없는 고양이라고 생각한다. 진보는 UN이야말로 지구상의 모든 문제를 해결할 수 있는 기구라고 믿는다.

Liberals think we should all be equal at the finish line. Conservatives think we should all be equal at the starting line.
평등한 기회와 평등한 결과는 전혀 다른 것인데 …

If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy. A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good.

If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life. If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a minority person is conservative, the person sees self as independently successful. The liberal counterpart sees self as a victim in need of government protection.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it. A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a conservative slips and falls in a store, he gets up, laughs and is embarrassed. If a liberal slips and falls, he grabs his neck, moans like he’s in labor and then sues.

If a conservative reads this, he’ll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh. A liberal will delete it because he’s “offended”.
